Emergency Care for Tempe and Chandler

Published September 17, 2026 · 4 min read

If it might be an emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department. We do not have an emergency room open in Tempe or Chandler, so the nearest one to you will not be ours — and that is the right answer, not a consolation. The nearest door is the right door.

The honest version first, because you came here for an answer rather than for a brochure.

We have no emergency room open in Tempe or Chandler today. The nearest emergency department to you is somebody else’s, and you should use it.

If it might be an emergency: call 911, or go to the closest emergency department. Do not spend time working out whose it is.

Why this page exists at all, if we cannot serve you

Because “where should I go” is a real question and a page that answered it dishonestly would be worse than no page.

And because two things here are genuinely useful to you even though they do not end at our door.

One: how to decide whether it is an emergency at all. Which door do you need is written for the decision itself — emergency department, urgent care, primary care, or 911 — and it does not assume you will pick ours. It is the most useful page on this site for somebody in your position.

Two: 911 holds the live picture. Which emergency departments are open, where they are, and what to send. No web page can do that, ours included. If you are unsure, ringing is the system working as intended.

What we do have in the east valley

Mercy Grace Pediatrics & Primary Care, in Gilbert — (480) 745-3702 Monday to Thursday 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM · Friday 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM · closed at the weekend Appointments required — it does not take walk-ins, and the number is not monitored for texts. Details

It is a clinic, not an emergency room, and it is geared towards families with children — mostly paediatrics, and it sees adults too, so a family can be seen in one place.

For a continuing relationship — well-child visits, immunisations, chronic conditions, the things that need watching — that is what it is for. For an emergency it is not the right building, and it is closed for most of the hours in a week.

The location that is coming, stated without embellishment

There is a future location in south Tempe. It is not open.

There is no opening date to give you — nobody has confirmed one, so we are not going to imply one. And we are not publishing a phone number for it, because a number for an unopened building either rings nowhere or rings the wrong people.

What we can say about it is on its own page, and it will say more when there is more that is true.

In the meantime, nothing about that plan should change what you do tonight. Nearest open emergency department, every time.

If you are willing to travel for non-emergency care

Our Fountain Hills clinic takes walk-ins on an urgent care basis — (602) 671-7981 — and it is the only one in our network that does.

Whether that is worth the journey from Tempe or Chandler is entirely your judgement, and we are not going to suggest it is close. For anything that might be an emergency it is the wrong question: go to the nearest emergency department instead.

We are not only for the towns we have buildings in

Our service area is the east and west valley and all surrounding cities, and nobody is turned away for living somewhere else. But service area is not the same as proximity, and on this page the distinction matters more than the reassurance does.

Questions people actually ask

Do you have an emergency room in Tempe? Not open, no. A future location exists with no confirmed opening date.

Do you have one in Chandler? No.

So where should I go? The nearest emergency department to where you are. If you do not know which that is, ring 911 and ask, or ring 911 outright if it might be serious.

Will you tell me when the Tempe location opens? The page for it is where that will be published when it is confirmed.

Can I use Mercy Grace for an emergency? No. It is a clinic with fixed hours and appointments are required. For an emergency, 911 or the nearest emergency department.

Can I be seen at Mercy Grace as a new patient? Ring and ask — and ring rather than text, because that number is not monitored for text messages.

Is it worth driving to one of your emergency rooms? Not for an emergency. Both are across the valley. Go to the nearest door. How far is too far, in an emergency answers that properly, and the answer is not flattering to us.

About your bill, before you worry about it

Ability to pay is not a barrier to assessment and access to care in our emergency rooms — by law. An emergency visit bills at emergency rates, which are not clinic rates, and we would rather tell you that now than have you find out afterwards.

If anything you receive after a visit is unclear, call the facility you were seen at before you pay it. They hold the record of your visit, and they would rather explain a statement than have you pay something you do not owe.
