If this may be life-threatening, call 911. Paramedics begin treatment on the way and can tell us you are coming.
Both of our emergency rooms are full-scope emergency rooms to Arizona standard. That is our own description of them, and since it is a phrase you have no way of checking from the outside, this page explains what we mean by it.
A department can be set up to take the straightforward presentations and route everything else onward. That is a legitimate model and it is not ours.
Full-scope means the door does not filter. Chest pain, breathing difficulty, injury and crush injury, dislocations, infection and fever, abdominal pain, allergic reaction, heat illness, COPD, croup, scorpion envenomation, stroke — all assessed and treated here rather than triaged at the threshold and sent somewhere else.
And both emergency rooms carry the same equipment and the same service list, which is why the honest answer to “which one” is whichever is closer.
Being able to take whatever arrives is mostly a question of what is physically present at 3am:
Ultrasound is the exception and it is stated separately every time: it is called in from an outside mobile service, often during the visit if ordered early enough, otherwise the next day.
Full-scope is a claim about breadth of emergency capability. It is not a claim to be a hospital, and the difference matters:
No inpatient beds. Where a patient needs to be admitted or needs hospital-level inpatient care, we stabilise here and arrange the transfer.
No operating theatres or specialist services. Some problems need those, and for those the answer is to get you to them with the work-up already done.
Not a pediatric emergency room. We treat children every day, and where a child needs a specialist level of paediatric care we arrange the transfer.
So “full-scope” and “not a hospital” are both true at once, and a site that stated only the first would be setting you up for a surprise at the worst possible hour.
Because the emergency category has genuinely confusing edges, and the labels are not self-explanatory. A patient cannot tell from a sign whether a building has a CT scanner, whether anybody is there to run it at 2am, or whether the department will take what they have.
The fix is not a better adjective. It is a checkable list, which is what the section above is meant to be. If we ever publish a capability we cannot demonstrate, that is a defect and worth telling us about.
Is a full-scope emergency room the same as a hospital emergency department? In what it can assess and begin treating, it is close. In what happens afterwards, no — a hospital can admit you upstairs and we arrange a transfer.
Will you turn me away for anything? Ability to pay is not a barrier to assessment and access to care in our emergency rooms, and by law. Where what you need is somewhere else, you are assessed, stabilised and moved rather than turned away.
Do both locations do the same things? Yes — same equipment, same service list. Go to whichever is closer.
What if I am not sure this counts as an emergency? Come in. That question is ours, not yours, and you are not expected to diagnose yourself.
Both of our emergency rooms are open 24 hours a day, every day of the year — walk in, no appointment and no referral, with CT, X-ray and a full laboratory in the building. Find your nearest emergency room →

Ability to pay is not a barrier to assessment and access to care in our emergency rooms — by law. An emergency visit bills at emergency rates, which are not clinic rates, and we would rather tell you that now than have you find out afterwards.
If anything you receive after a visit is unclear, call the facility you were seen at before you pay it. They hold the record of your visit, and they would rather explain a statement than have you pay something you do not owe.
