Why Both Our Emergency Rooms Carry the Same Equipment List

Published September 17, 2026 · 2 min read

If this may be life-threatening, call 911 and go to the nearest emergency room — the nearest one, not ours if something closer exists.

Because you should not have to research us at 2am.

That is the whole reason, and this post is short on purpose.

The answer to “which one”

Whichever is closer.

Fountain Hills and El Mirage carry the same equipment and the same service list. Both are full-scope emergency rooms to Arizona standard. Both have CT, X-ray and a full laboratory in the building, staffed around the clock. Both have a critical care room. Both can hold and monitor a patient for up to 24 hours. Both are walk-in and open every hour of every day.

So there is no version of the question where the further one is the better choice.

Why that matters more than it sounds like it should

The alternative — where two facilities under one name do different things — creates a problem for exactly the person least able to solve it.

Somebody with chest pain at two in the morning is not in a position to work out which location has the scanner, which has the lab overnight, or which takes their presentation. They should not have to. And in an emergency, distance is clinical rather than logistical: the minutes between you and the nearest emergency department are a medical variable.

A network where the answer is always “the closest one” removes a decision from a moment that already has too many.

What it does not mean

It does not mean ours is the nearest door to you. Two emergency rooms cover a lot of the Valley and nothing like all of it. If another emergency department is closer, that one is the right answer tonight, and we would rather say so than have you drive past it.

It does not mean the clinics are interchangeable. They are not, and they are a different thing entirely — our clinics have their own hours, their own numbers, and one of them is built for children specifically. See locations.

And it does not mean both buildings feel identical. They are different buildings in different towns. The equipment and the service list are what is held constant.

Questions people actually ask

Is one of them the “main” one? No. Neither is a satellite of the other.

Does one have longer hours? Both are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Will one see children and not the other? Both. We are not a pediatric emergency room, and we treat children every day — that is true at both locations, as is arranging transfer where a child needs a specialist level of paediatric care.

Should I call ahead to check? You do not need to. Walk in. And for anything life-threatening, call 911 rather than us.

About your bill, before you worry about it

Ability to pay is not a barrier to assessment and access to care in our emergency rooms — by law. An emergency visit bills at emergency rates, which are not clinic rates, and we would rather tell you that now than have you find out afterwards.

If anything you receive after a visit is unclear, call the facility you were seen at before you pay it. They hold the record of your visit, and they would rather explain a statement than have you pay something you do not owe.
